Scott Campbell<br />Lee Bermejo<br /><br />...and of course, Jim Lee.<br /><br />I was familiar with some of his earlier work in X-Men and WildC.A.T.s but the book that got me hooked as a Jim Lee fan for life was the Batman : Hush storyline that he did with Jeph Loeb. I remember that it was one of the first few books I bought when I started buying comics seriously way back when I was in NS. Recently though, I think he's been paired up with crappy writers that don't do him justice (Brian Azarello and Frank Miller, I'm looking at youse guys). His art's still top notch but the writing... gah... don't get me started.<br /><br />Anyhoo, today we be reviewing three of my recent purchases; Jim Lee 'Hush' versions of Batman, Catwoman and Huntress. <br /><br /><div id="hush" style="display: none;"><br /><br />I actually bought the set because of Catwoman. I needed a Catwoman for my Batman collection. <strike>I was holding out for the reissue of the DCSH Catwoman but it's gonna be purple so</strike> Forget it, I just did some research on the DCSH Catwoman and am glad I didn't (and won't be) buying it.<br /><br /><img src="http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd7/inkblotcomicsmail/HUSH3.png"><br /><br /><br />While I was sure that I'd be opening Catwoman up, I wasn't too sure about Huntress and Batman. But then I thought : "Ah, what the hell..."<br /><br /><img src="http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd7/inkblotcomicsmail/HUSH4.png"><br /><br />Having Huntress in the mix means that I have to hunt down Nightwing too... Hmmmm....<br /><br /><img src="http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd7/inkblotcomicsmail/HUSH2.png"><br /><br />Anyhoo, the biggest surprise that came out of these three (besides Catwoman's cool removable goggles) was Batman. I was contemplating of hawking him off as I already have a couple of Batman figures and didn't need another one but the little voice in my head went "But it's Jim Lee Batman!". Well I'm glad I listened to him coz this guys is spiffy cool man. Maybe I'll go into details in a followup post. However after spending just a few minutes with this SMO one, I can proudly say that I don't care anymore. This SMO one is so darn articulate! Very the cool beans! <br /><br /><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zMnCafcxWhQ/SdI1YxXWyGI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/PPhhoIx9etA/s1600/docock.png" width="400"><br /><br />The only difference between this Doc Ock and the ML one are the colours so I'm happy with him! The above poster is classy, methinks and is a simple visual representation of what the movie is basically about.<br /><br />I think that the poster below is an unsuccessful ape-ing of the <u><a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm60/XzN-Staff/The_Dark_Knight_Poster13.jpg" target="blank">Dark</a><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span><a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://the-reviewer.net/wp-content/uploads/the-dark-knight-joker-poster-500w.jpg" target="blank">Knight</a><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span><a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://spoiledreviews.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/april-dark-knight-poster.jpg" target="blank">Posters</a></u> (what with the grim and gritty blue hued background and all). The issue however, is not with the background, but the poor positioning of the characters. Nay, <span style="font-style: italic;">really</span> poor postioning of the characters. Anyhoo, why am I waxing so much lyrical on the posters? I digress. On with the review!<br /><br /><div id="wm" style="display: none;"><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zMnCafcxWhQ/SbKabeV-_iI/AAAAAAAAAI0/yeDyfphdxOA/s1600-h/posterb.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 265px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zMnCafcxWhQ/SbKabeV-_iI/AAAAAAAAAI0/yeDyfphdxOA/s400/posterb.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5310476707415653922" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Poor composition, much?</span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Plot</span><br /><br />I've already read the graphic novel so I basically knew the plot of the movie. At the start of the movie, I constantly wondered to myself whether that was a good or a bad thing. Still, I was glad that my recollection of the details of the plot was a little hazy (the last time I read the comic was two years ago, I think) coz it put me in a win/win 50/50 position. Having said all that though, I think having read the source material made sitting through the extra long opening sequence more meaningful. :D<br /><br />I thought that the plot suffered from a slow build up. It felt rather plodding and was just quite slowly moving along for the first half of the movie. Granted, they had a lotta things to establish, but it felt like things could have been presented more succinctly, or at the very least have had more M18 violence (and no, I'm not talking about no more added instances of CGI dongs -_-'). Thankfully, things picked up around halfway through the movie and I can confidently say that it's all thanks to Rorschach.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Rorschach </span><br /><br />Rorschach made the M18 rating worth it and to me (and the missus :P), he was the best part of the movie. He was a badass psycho (gotta love'em badass psychos!) and had the coolest scenes in the movie. My favourite line which he says to the convicts : "You got it all wrong. I'm not trapped in here with you. You're the ones trapped in here with <span style="font-weight: bold;">me</span>." As they say, "Respect, <span style="font-style: italic;">sia</span>." Haha.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Costumes</span><br /><br />I find the costumes very well done. The coolest was Rorschach's mask and Night Owl costume. I didn't think that they would make the blobs move around in the movie but they did, so extra points! :D <br /><br />I'm also really relieved that they redesigned Night Owl's costume for the movie. Coz if not, it would have looked like this :<br /><br /><img src="http://www.flytecrewblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/niteowl.jpg" /><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Just like in the comics... only more moustache-y</span><br /><br />Yerrrrrrp. -_-'<br /><br />Anyhoo, I just gotta add this in. I've read rumors on the interwebs about Zack Snyder taking over from Nolan after he's completed his trilogy. It would definitely be cool to see him do Batman in full comic book style mode; without the trappings of needing to ground him in the real world. All in favour? :D<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Visuals</span><br /><br />The visuals were excellent. Archie was <span style="font-style:italic;">da bomb</span> and the crazy intricacies of that whatchamacallit structure thingie on Mars was very much <span style="font-style:italic;">whoa</span>. From the effects to the choreography of the fight scenes, the visuals get a definite A+ from me.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Casting</span><br /><br />I found the casting to be almost perfect, save for Ozymandias whom I found too skinny. I thought that he didn't really fit the part and when he got into costume, I was like, "Whoa dude... Bulk up a bit..." He seems to be a pretty popular member of the Greek pantheon in pop culture these days it seems coz I seem to recall him popping up in some other fine geektastic literature (think Kratos, Mighty Avengers, JLU, etc.) Anyhoo, Ares (who kinda reminds me of the Superman Animated Series Metallo) is up to all sorts of shenanigans that mostly spells doom for mankind and needs a-stoppin'.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zMnCafcxWhQ/SavICsC5DbI/AAAAAAAAAIE/XevmVlIivk0/s1600-h/ww5.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zMnCafcxWhQ/SavICsC5DbI/AAAAAAAAAIE/XevmVlIivk0/s400/ww5.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308556534294842802" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">"This... is... The Timm-esque influences in the angular features of the characters are clearly apparent but the details in the art show a mix of Disney and anime influences. From the various decapitations, human sacrifices and risque humour, this is clearly one for the geeks who are a bit older. Well, the cockpit slides open to reveal a detailed mobile command centre.
